Publish a sitemap

Why it matters

A sitemap tells crawlers every page you want read, and when each last changed, so new and updated pages are picked up sooner.

How to fix it

  1. Generate /sitemap.xml listing your public pages (most CMSs and frameworks do this with a plugin or one setting).
  2. Give each page a real <lastmod> date, and update it when the page changes.
  3. Add “Sitemap: https://yoursite/sitemap.xml” to robots.txt.
  4. Submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
